For Children and Adults
Orthodontics for Children
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children receive an orthodontic check-up by age 7. Although most patients start orthodontic treatment when all of the permanent teeth are in (around age 11 or 12), some patients with moderate to severe bite problems or crowding would benefit from earlier, or “Phase I” treatment. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaws and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches and gain space for the permanent teeth.
The benefits of early intervention include:
- Prevent extraction of permanent teeth
- Prevent tooth impaction
- Eliminate habits which could lead to bite problems (thumb-sucking)
- Improve self esteem
- Reduce complexity and duration of later treatment
Most patients do not need early intervention or Phase I treatment, but an initial screening at age 7 can give you peace of mind that you are not missing an opportunity to correct a significant orthodontic problem. Most patients start comprehensive treatment around age 11 or 12, but orthodontic treatment can be started at any age!
Orthodontics for Adults
While most people associate orthodontic treatment with children and teenagers, adults can benifit from it as well. In fact, today about one-third of all orthodontic patients are adults. Less visible, as well as more comfortable braces, such as Invisalign, make treatment more appealing and convenient than ever. Teeth can be orthodontically moved at any age, and our patients tell us that the positive impact on their appearance and self-esteem is unparalleled. In addition, orthodontic treatment is often needed in preparation for other restorative dental work such as implants or veneers. During the initial visit, we can discuss the treatment options available to you.
Its important that every patient, particularly an adult patient, be seen by their general dentist prior to starting orthodontic treatment.
